John MacArthur & Doug Pagitt on Yoga in CNN Debate
A CNN debate on “Is Yoga Biblical?” between Dr. MacArthur and Pagitt. Listen to Pagitt’s comments after the end of the debate as he talked personally to the lady who recorded it. I thought it’s sad to hear Pastor Doug Pagitt’s sarcastic response in regards to MacArthur’s comments concerning the Word of God.

I’ve always felt that the idea of “emptying your mind” was a pretty anti-Biblical thing to do. I mean, I know liberals do it all the time but that’s another story. Haa. Stretching and relaxing is one thing. Yoga is something entirely different. Of course, just to be on the safe side I abstain from all forms of exercise. Just kidding.

I saw this debate on YouTube last week. The Scriptures seem to indicate that God\\\’s people are to abstain from the evil practices they once participated in, making themselves holy unto God. I agree with Joe - the idea and philosophy behind yoga is decidedly un-biblical. Paul\’s letter to the Colossians tells us to ditch philosophies that take us away from Christ.
Stretching and exercise are different in that they are strictly health related. I practiced a mixed Chinese martial art for 13 years; eventually, I needed to give it up. Near the end, the combination of my growing maturity in Christ (such as it was) coupled with their growing demands on my time plus their pushing an evil, pagan philosophy onto the students finally came to the point where I needed to make a choice. I either follow Christ with all my time and power, or I follow this martial art. The choice was obvious. Physical exercise and self-defense is one thing…incorporating a pagan philosophy into the physical actions makes the entire exercise evil.

“I either follow Christ with all my time and power, or I follow this martial art.”
I know what you mean. We only have a limited amount of time each day. If we are spending most of our time on things we want to do, where does that show our priorities to be. I have been convicted of that particularly in the area of Bible study. There is A LOT I need to be getting done in that area but I haven’t made the time that I really need to in order to do it properly.

Matthew 7:15-20
Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Therefore by their fruits you will know them.
The last sentence describes Pagitt. He sounds like a false prophet. He sounds a lot like another in the past who ridiculed the Word of God, by saying “Has God indeed said …?” when Eve was deceived.
By their fruit you shall know them!

Hi Jess,
It’s been awhile since I last visited your blog, hope that life is getting more and more meaningful for you there
You must be very excited about going to DG’s conference, what a lucky lady, I mean compare to me, because I should be well-satisfied only by browsing through DG’s website
This yoga thing is quite interesting. I once read two pro-con by ChristianityToday writers and it helped broadened my narrow view (not that it’s getting wider by now, hahaha!) about Yoga. Since the fast internet connection is not on my side, thus, again, I should be well-satisfied only by reading the materials in the internet
But glad you put this topic up, perhaps you can share how Yoga is like there (in US). Thanks, Princess Jessica

I am sure you can’t wait for the Desiring God conference coming up! I look forward to reading on here about how you enjoyed it and what you learned.

Thank you all for your comments and inputs!
Hi Joe, yes, I agree. I like what John MacArthur said in regards to filling our minds with the things of God Who is above us.
Hi Michael, good points! Glad to know you visited my blog.
Pastor Bruce, nice to hear from you. Yes, that’s true…essentially that’s what he did by downplaying and mocking the Word of God.

Hey Grace!!
WOW, I’m soo glad to know you visited back!
It’s been a while since we last wrote each other…and I missed hearing from you. How are things with you? Anything new? I hope that you have been doing well!
Yeah, I’m quite excited to hear and see Dr. Piper preach in person. Woohoo, it’ll be so exciting, Grace. On Saturday the conference will open for seating around 7 A.M. I am actually not a morning person at all, but you can count on my waking up & sliding off the bed early to gain some good seating.
It was so good to hear from you. Talk to you again soon!

Hi Lori,
Great to hear from you!
Oh yes, I’d like to share about it. I need to do some mini-packing for the trip. I’m thinking of bringing a book for him to possibly sign
and perhaps a camera to snap a picture of me standing next to Dr. Piper just to capture the memory of the conference.
I don’t know if I’ll even have a chance to do those, since I’m sure it’ll be so crowded… but I guess I’ll see.
Thanks for your kind, sweet note!
I hope that you’re having a lovely week so far. Will keep in touch again soon.

Hi Jess, what a warm greeting
More things have actually been better, I spend more time with my Dad lately. I feel God is giving my family a chance to get him well-prepared before his time to meet the Lord comes.
I spend quite some time for contemplating and often were surprised that things I once asked have already been fulfilled, it’s me that often realized it too lately :). God is always working behind the scenes and thus I now learn to thank Him not only for what I receive today, but also the things yet unseen. Apostle Paul was so right when he said, “Rejoice always!”
I try to picture an exciting young woman who is not a morning person at all trying to get up as early as possible for a good seating at an event she has been waiting so eagerly and what I see is myself! Well, only in messier situation
:D Hope it’s very much enjoyable and will be waiting for your sharing!

Dear Grace,
I’m thankful things are going better for you lately.
Hey, I just noticed your Gravatar photo next to your comment!
It’s a cute, pretty picture.
Yep, He is indeed. Even when nothing seems to be happening, God is working behind the scenes.
Ha ha ha
You’re right…I am much more of a night person than morning person. I get so alert at night when things are already dark outside. That’s when I’m more productive, for some reason. I was able to get a great seat for the first day of the Desiring God conference, by the way… in fact, the fourth row from the pulpit.
Speaking of which, I just wrote and posted a new blog entry today about the conference, complete with a photo of myself with Dr. John Piper. Feel free to take a look at it. I’m actually shy when showing pics of myself, but this time I’m showing it not because of me but more because John Piper is in it.
I hope you’ve been having a good week thus far. And I wish you a blessed day of worship this Lord’s Day!

Jessica, it supposed to a thank you to your blog as I got to learn about Gravatar
It’s the picture of me that you’ve seen before actually, so you can be assured that it’s me, hehehe… I’ve checked the post of DG conference, read it happily though hoped for more story
But at least that picture of a shy lady would do for awhile
May your Sunday be very much meaningful, too, Jess, my sister-in-Christ-via-the Internet
