Free Download: Foxe’s Book of Martyrs
Hello friends,
I was delighted to discover that for this month of May, ChristianAudio.com’s free audiobook download of the month is the Foxe’s Book of Martyrs!
This wonderful book traces the roots of religious persecution from Stephen in the book of Acts, considered the first Christian martyr, to the early Church’s persecution under the Roman empire.
It is fascinating and encouraging to read of the great “cloud of witnesses” and those “heroes of the faith” who came before us. I first heard of this title after hearing Dr. Joe Morecraft’s sermon series on the History of the Reformation. It gave me a renewed love for church history. There are so many lessons to learn from these great men who fought in the time of Reformation, many of whom are included in the book including John Wycliffe, John Huss, William Tyndale, Martin Luther, Thomas Cranmer. The details of the sufferings and pain which they were willing to endure will move you to tears. It gave me pause also about the things and certain freedom that we take for granted today.
For those interested in reading the written version of this work, there are many versions and editions sold, but I recommend the particular edition prepared by W. Grinton Berry because, to the best of my knowledge, I believe it’s unabridged. The audiobook is a slightly different version from this paperback edition, but I think it is pretty good, too.
The free download is available till the end of this month. I hope you’ll enjoy it!

Hello TK,
There are many good articles and sermons online available that explains this doctrine. If you’re interested in watching or listening to sermons on Total Depravity, Dr. John Piper did a series on the Doctrines of Grace series … I would recommend listening to all the lectures of the whole series in order because it would give a more systematic understanding and since Total Depravity is but a part of TULIP. Here’s the link to:
Dr. Piper’s Resources on The Doctrines of Grace – scroll down the page and find “Seminars on the Doctrines of Grace” section where you can choose to watch or listen.
If you prefer to read instead:
Total Depravity by Dr. John Piper
Total Depravity by Dr. Loraine Boettner
I hope these may be of help and that you enjoy the study!

Thanks Jessica, that really helped. John Piper is such an excellent teacher of the Word of God. Sometimes as a calvinist it is so tough because i am sorrounded by arminians and semi palagians but i stick to my reformed beliefs by his Grace. Have you seen the DVD Amazing Grace: the theology and history of calvinism.
God bless

Hi TK, you’re welcome. I hope it’s helpful.
Yes, I own a copy of the DVD actually and have seen parts of it.
Enjoy a wonderful rest of the week!

Hi there Jessica.
Since you are interested in history I would like to suggest a couple of books.
The first “The History of the Reformation” by J.H. Merle d’Aubigne – it was published by Banner of Truth Trust. It was *this* book which taught me that history is ordinary men of God (and women too, though I am not sure d’Aubigne mentions any of the women – sadly) doing extraordinary things for him. I suddenly realised the wonder of ordinariness.
Second, America’s Providential History (Including Biblical Principles of Education, Government, Politics, Economics, and Family Life) (Paperback) ~ Mark A. Beliles (Author), Stephen K. McDowell (Author). Published by the Providence Foundation in Charlottesvill VA.
While I don’t endorse everything in the second book it is an interesting snapshot of the various people and events which shaped this country.
Mind you, if you can bear a historical novel or two you might fin “Keepers of the Ring” series by Angela Elwell Hunt (for an alternative view of that same history – more sympathetic to the Native Americans than many).
Perhaps you may find these some help in your enjoyment of the Lord of heaven and earth and his great patience toward us
